I'm a self-motivated and hard working individual, looking to pursue a career in the publishing industry. I'm passionate about literature and the arts, in particular theatre and drama. I have an eclectic taste in literature and have recently penned and illustrated my own Children's book, which has been signed for publication by The Book Guild. I have experience working as an editorial freelancer and have a significant portfolio of work as a theatre reviewer. I have interned for both HarperCollins and Canongate Books and am looking to take the next step in my career. I have practical knowledge of: Biblio, BOS, Excel, InDesign, ISSUU, Nielsen BookScan, Outlook, Photoshop, PowerPoint, Prezi, Shutterstock, Word, WordPress, Hootsuite and other social media platforms. I have previous experience working as a voluntary archivist for the Special Collections, Brotherton Library, University of Leeds. As a strong team player I enjoy playing netball and have achieved Gold Duke of Edinburgh. I also hold a TA qualification in Lifesaving. I have six LAMDA Gold Medals (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) and am a confident public speaker who is able to communicate with people at all levels. I am a good listener who is prepared to entertain other people’s ideas and proffer my own suggestions. I can converse comfortably in French with native speakers. I am an accomplished pianist and strongly believe that the creative side of my personality will flourish in the publishing workplace.
Following a successful internship with Leckie & Leckie I was hired as an editorial freelancer for Collins Learning.
I have been writing for The Reviews Hub, previously The Public Reviews, as a theatre journalist since 2011. Originally writing for the Yorkshire region, in August 2014 I joined the Scotland team and reviewed shows in Edinburgh including shows at the 2015 Fringe Festival. I have since rejoined the Yorkshire and North East team. I have written pieces on a wide variety of performance genres, from ballet to puppetry, and from musical theatre to drama. My reviewer name is S.E. Webster or Sarah Webster.
My experience with the Campaigns department was wide-ranging, from market research to web-based tasks. These included creating digital extracts of books, editing content for the website using WordPress and social media management. I created show cards and liaised with booksellers for author events and I was involved in general office administration. In Sales I prepared and assembled AI packs, order forms and press releases, in addition to PowerPoints used at the London Book Fair. Within both departments I attended a series of general and departmental company board meetings.
During my publishing studies I spent 1 day/week for 10 weeks interning with Leckie and Leckie, an education publisher and imprint of HarperCollins specialising in coursebooks and revision materials for the Scottish education system. At Leckie and Leckie I was involved in a variety of marketing tasks. These ranged from social media management to Google Analytics, and from creating design briefs for adverts to updating order forms and liaising with copy editors. In Editorial I was involved with proofreading manuscripts and image research. I also attended an industry conference where I worked with staff, promoting titles to customers.
