I'm a freelance journalist who likes to shout about environmental issues, mental health advocacy, women's rights and youth culture, whether that's through writing, podcasting or video. I am inspired by the potential of science and tech to revolutionise human life; whether that's smart cities, health monitoring, future farming or space travel, there is plenty to discuss. I also have experience (in both a personal and professional capacity) in creative writing, magazine design, photography and film.
Tech Talks reaches over 10,000 technology experts and entrepreneurs a month. It discusses the big issues facing technology with a particular focus on telling the life stories of technology pioneers through interviews. Guests who feature on the podcast come from companies such as Tesla, Telegraph Media Group and TUI. This podcast is more of a relaxed entertaining chat at the pub than a boardroom meeting. I co-host this podcast twice a month, where I bring a fresh, frank voice to discussing tech news; whittling away the jargon and exploring how technology is actually affecting real people. I also produce heavily researched features, tackling topics such as workplace happiness and GovTech.
UKTN is a B2B tech news website, focusing on the startup scene across the country and tech political developments. As a reporter for UKTN, I broke exclusive funding news, analysed political tech decisions, interviewed key industry figures and wrote original features and roundups including The Week in Tech. • I co-managed the social media accounts, which resulted in audience and engagement growth for the brand. • The responsibilty and freedom I was given at UKTN was massively beneficial for me; I often handled the site independently, represented the brand at industry events and chased stories off my own back. • Upon leaving UKTN, I have an impressive industry contact book and a high-level of knowledge of the intersection between business and tech.
I spent a fantastic six months as an editorial intern at Wired UK. I wrote news and features on a range of topics, including science, technology, art, business and mental health. I have also gained experience in: - Social media scheduling; I ran the Twitter account and helped manage the Facebook page. - Assisting on video shoots for WIRED Originals and directing my own feature, The Lightning Lab. - Live-tweeting and producing Instagram stories/videos for events. - Appearing on the award-winning podcast - Contributing to page design for the magazine, using InDesign.
I was offered a paid position following a successful work placement, where I assisted with studio production for two weekly radio shows; Football Heaven and Clueless.
I ran the news team of Forge Radio; the student run station at the University of Sheffield. I produced two weekly shows alongside a team, was responsible for attracting and retaining members and reporting on stories which mattered to the student population. I gained a lot of leadership experience, through organising media events, interviewing campaign officers, desk driving, and social media scheduling.
I graduated from Sheffield's Journalism Studies degree with a 1st classification. I also have my NCTJ certificate, and achieved 100wpm shorthand. I explored a range of media skills, from web design to feature writing and film making - to media law and investigative journalism.
