Simon Bray is a Manchester based artist, currently utilising photography and text to explore the notions of loss, identity and place. Through project collaborations with artists and participants, he looks to encourage the exploration of our connection with locations formed through memory, shared experience and emotional response. His work has been shown at Manchester International Festival, The Whitworth, Southbank Centre, Brighton Photo Biennial, The Guardian, Telegraph Magazine, BBC In Pictures and BBC Breakfast TV. In 2018, Simon worked with British documentary photographer Martin Parr, producing his new commission for Manchester Art Gallery, exhibiting until April 2019. Simon also undertakes editorial and commercial photographic commissions.
Projects
- Ambient 4 : On LandPhotographs of the locations that inspired the seminal ambient album by Brian Eno, released in 1982. Using the liner notes from the record, research online and using maps, I have found and visited the 4 locations that feature within the record, both in Cornwall and Suffolk, to make photographs. The images are inspired by Brian's ethereal and strange music and utilise the locations as subject matter. Simon Bray is a Manchester based artist and commercial photographer, who develops projects exploring place, through photography, text and sound, investigating our connection to place and its influence on our personal identity.
His documentary project 'Loved&Lost' invites participants to explore their experience of loss through the restringing of family photographs and audio interview. It has been featured on BBC Breakfast TV, BBC News, BBC Local Radio, The Guardian and Positive News.
In 2017, Simon was one of 6 artists invited to undertake a fellowship with Manchester International Festival, working alongside Hong Kong based artist Samson Young.
Simon collaborated with artist Tom Musgrove on landscapes project 'The Edges Of These Isles', supported by a 120-page self-published book sponsored by G.F SMITH and documentary film. It was featured by Outdoor Photography Magazine, Another Place Press, Oh Comely and YHA Magazine.
He has undertaken editorial commissions for publications such as The Telegraph Magazine, Pasture, Lodestars Anthology and Rakesprogress. He was also invited to make new work for the publication ‘This Is The Place : Choose Love’, by Tony Walsh & Friends, a book commemorating those lost after the Manchester bombing.
Simon's work has been shown at The Whitworth, The Southbank Centre, Brewery Arts Kendal, Open Eye, CFCCA and Oriel Colwyn.
