Sonia Faria Almeida was born in Orleans, France in 1983. In the 1990's she returned to Portugal where she pursued her interest in photography.
She began her career in photography in 2012, Sonias work was firstly influenced by the photographs of Francesca Woodman which deals with the subjects of isolation and loneliness. The influence of this can be seen in Almeida's early work where she used herself as the model in her photographs portraying in detail all of the physical individuality of the human female form.
This work later developed to explore the ordinary, to find visual interest which would usually be mundane. Her work examines ordinary life such as people and places and the movement which takes place in her day to day life.
Her latest works explore the area of Poolbeg and Pigeon House near the Dublin docklands, this urban landscape is rarely viewed for the subject of photography. By photographing the area over a period of time the aim is to capture essence and identity of this part of the city and visually emphasise its uniqueness as part of the Dublin skyline which would normally be overlooked.
