About me
Growing up I was fortunate to visit a range of galleries and museums but often struggled to connect with the formal, traditional styles of presentation; as I have developed my own interests and tastes I found galleries and exhibitions much more engaging, however this traditional, white wall style continues to dominate many spaces. I have always been drawn to interactive exhibitions, something you can contribute too and feel a part of. What I lack in experience I make up for with enthusiasm and a positive, organised approach to learning and developing my existing skills. I am eager to learn every aspect of the curation process. I am a recent Photography graduate from Sheffield Hallam University, throughout my time at university I was involved in two exhibitions (Heptad-second year group exhibition and Cockatoo-final year degree show) within these exhibitions I was a part of the curation team and further developed an interest in the design and engagement of exhibitions. Whilst roles varied in each exhibition I found myself most interested in the layout of the exhibitions and their promotion; the ability to display work in a way that connects and intrigues a variety of people creates opportunity to view art, it’s surroundings and our own world differently - helping to adjust our perceptions in a permanent way. I am passionate about accessibility to the arts and would like to learn how to best develop and engage the public with a variety of topics and styles within a range of settings. The use of social media is now one of the most effective ways to communicate within modern society, this tool can reach such a variety of people and give previews of the art and layout of the gallery itself; as well as quickly communicating developments in the space. Although this is not a substitute for viewing the work first hand it is a powerful way of inspiring curiosity. I am interested in the potential of temporary exhibitions in community spaces, as a way to increase involvement and engagement across a broad spectrum of society; taking art into the community as a way of engaging residents and encouraging access to the arts. Whilst I am happy to work alone I gain a lot from working as part of a team and am always interested in others view points, as well as finding team work a valuable learning tool. Since graduating I have done freelance work as a photographic assistant, from this experience I gained insight into a professional, time pressured working environment where fast paced thinking and intuitive response is required to get the job done efficiently. These attributes I feel are applicable in many working environments and are skills which I would look forward to developing further.
