About me
Greetings! I'm Sophie, a freelance writer, journalist and digital content creator from Nottingham, UK. My passion for writing led me to study a Masters in Magazine Journalism and I have an array of marketing experience promoting independent businesses, from popular tourist destinations to boutique retail stores. I like to imbue everything I do with individuality, quality and creativity. You can find much of my work at The Dilettante, a satirical blog and zine offering curious history, humour and content on living a creative life, of which I am the founder and editor.

The Art of AgeingOld age is something we all have ahead of us. But once we leave behind the toil of employment and careers, once children are grown and dreams achieved, what do we do with ourselves? Writer & EditorThe Dilettante
    Nottingham, United KingdomFreelance
I am founder of The Dilettante, an online zine and blog dedicated to inspiration, advice, history and humour. Dedicated to the creative and curious minded, oddballs, eccentrics, artists and outsiders, The Dilettante exists in the hope of providing a small respite from the mundanity of everyday life and the internet. The Dilettante began in 2013 when two creatively confused friends sat down to make A Thing. Having both dabbled in various art forms over the years without ever settling on a particular forte, the concept of the dilettante - a lover of the arts who pursues creativity in many forms - seemed a natural direction. The result was a bi-monthly Nottingham themed broadside, The Dilettante Gazette, which was inspired by DIY publishing, zines and chapbooks of the 18th century. Along hosting with monthly Dilettante Society meetings, creative workshops and events, The Dilettante often featured bespoke promotion of favoured local independent businesses, delving into the history or character of each business. Today The Dilettante exists the digital world, with occasional print publications. I am now the sole writer and designer for The Dilettante, and handle all of those various finicky website management jobs that have no clear title.

Visual Culture is a diverse course spanning the history of art and design, media, advertising and sociology. My dissertation focused on the rise of the bohemian artist, from the 'mad, bad and dangerous to know' Lord Byron, through the arcades of fin de siécle Paris to the debauched days of 20s Fitzrovia and 50s Soho.
