As cliché and blah as it sounds……I love painting, I love creating, I love being inspired. Simple.
I am a UK, Berkshire, based contemporary artist, who has been working on my craft for the last 2 years, building up my confidence to be able to say when people ask the question “So what do you do?” I can say “I AM AN ARTIST” with no hesitation or looking awkwardly to floor feeling embarrassed, silly I know.
I studied Art, and then I gave it up, not forever. Always worked in creative industries, yet never quite felt fully fulfilled. In the beginning of 2016 I had a total mental breakdown and it became apparent I suffered and was diagnosed with Depression and Anxiety (no this is not an X-Factor story), it was dark and horrible, I was completely and utterly lost and that’s all that needs to be said. Painting made its way back onto my radar and thank goodness it did, purely for the escapism it gave me, especially mentally. Just me, my materials and my music, in my own space, no one else, no questions, no judgement, feeling at my most comfortable, feeling totally free, to express and create anything I want.
When it comes to putting paint to canvas, I will sit and just sit all day sometimes, being nostalgic about life moments and then comes the moment when I just want to make some f**king cool art, that I want to share and hang on some walls. Emotion, Life moments (big or small), People, Surroundings, all inspire my work, I guess that’s why most people always say how personal my work feels. As well as other elements colour, texture, shapes, architecture, symmetry.
I prefer to work on a larger scale, deep edge, primed cotton canvases. Although I have scaled my creations down to a smaller scale on some occasions for customer commissions, and to give more range in size for my art. However, I do feel with my bold choice of colour palettes, and marks on the surface, translates better and is aesthetically more pleasing the bigger they are.
I tend to work mainly in Acrylic but also use Spray paint, chalks/chalk markers, pastels, even household emulsion. I love creating layers and different texture, so it is very rare that I use only one type of paint source. Tools, anything goes, brushes, ink rollers, palette knives, scrapers, tape. I love experimenting with the way a certain tool will apply the paint and the marks you can create.
Colours can be chosen by what they traditionally represent, the natural emotion they can encourage. My signature colour choices tend to be bright bold (sometimes fluorescent) colours against more muted subdued tones, whether they complement or contrast. Areas of solid, undisturbed colour, sitting with broken, mixed or diluted ones, structured or distorted lines and shapes. Structure against chaos. I want the result to be a statement, striking, eye catching piece of contemporary art.
