About me
I am a professional architect and multi-disciplinary designer with 25+ years of international experience in architecture, graphic, furniture and jewellery design.
I have supervised the build of 178 600m² with a total project value of R1 590 500 000 (± $111 000 000)
I thrive in the intersection between craftsmanship, ‘human-ness’ and the ROI of design.
I am deeply curious about what makes us behave the way we do, and the effect that design has on our human-ness. We know that humans are complex creatures and I’m fascinated how our culture, worldview, behaviour and ambiguity under different conditions make us act in different ways. I love exploring how this manifests in design, and strongly believe that our built environment can influence people’s emotional well-being and ultimately their mental health.
Craftsmanship is only truly achieved when thinking and making work together. An abstract design concept would not be brought into the world without skill, commitment and judgment.
Design and craftsmanship would be valueless without a return on investment. This isn’t only a financial return. If I’m able to offer joy, insight, value, an improvement, or insight through analysis, then there is a return on investment. Only when there is a return on investment, is a design successful.
These values would be diminished if I wasn’t also passionate about improving and re-designing our design practice. HOW we design is the ultimate design skill, and I’m always looking for ways to rationalise and improve the way that design work is done within teams, and within projects. It is imperative that the design methodology improves so that project costs are kept to a minimum, and implementation is reached sooner.
I have explored and participated in alternative education methods to learn how agility and curiosity can improve the way that projects are undertaken and delivered. Curiosity, rigour and optimisation drive the way I approach design and delivery of projects.
