  • Lomographer Magazine
Lomographer MagazineFor this project I was asked to create a magazine based upon my own interest. I chose to devote the magazine to lomography. I was asked to source, commission and produce the content . The title ‘Lomographer’ reflects upon the name given to people that use lomography and photography. The content focuses on the types of photography that lomomgraphers would like to create themselves and stories with their own cameras to inspire fellow lomographers. The design of the spreads approach photography in
  • The Sunday Times Re-Design
The Sunday Times Re-DesignWorking as a team we were required to redesign the Sunday Times’ print edition. This consisted of the front page, page two and three. Our design decisions regarded the relevance to the requirements of readability and the content by changing the format to a Berliner. The brand was a core element within this assignment, therefore the nature of the Sunday Times was approached by enhancing the legacy and British heritage. This was communicated through the typographic choices and colours ‘royal blue’ that reflect a British feel to the news and the types of content it publishes.
  • Spa Magazine 'Unwind'
Spa Magazine 'Unwind'This project was a live brief from a client "The good spa guide' they proposed that they would like a new design of their spa magazine. I started by researching the clients website and current publication to establish design aspects and to get to know the client. A key aspect to this project was the target audience this lead my research in to the design direction. The clients target audience was women (30-50) who read Harpers Bazaar and Tatler. I looked at these publications and into the social demographics of the audience. I noticed that certain design considerations used were using elegant serif typefaces. This gave a luxury and sophisticated feel to the publications. This is where I looked at the typefaces that I could chose and one that would appeal to the target audience. I chose a typeface has is very elegant a look that the client wanted. Italics are used in the design as this helped to create a dreamy flow throughout the spreads. From the briefing the client gave the impression that ‘me time is precious’ this was a key focus for my design choices, I wanted the target audience to get the most out of the spa experience from the magazine its self, by bringing elements in to the design. These included the selection of images chosen on the spreads these help to draw the audience into the spa mood of the calm and relaxing experience. I wanted the spreads to create a spa atmosphere, from researching colours I chose a calming palette that reflected this from using gold associated with luxury, lavender that reduces stress. These colours help to contribute to the spa experience through design. I came up with the name ‘Unwind’ because it is associated with de-stressing and relaxing. This also relates to the reading experience of the spa magazine, you unwind while your reading. This idea was presented to the client where I received positive feedback.
  • Book Series Design
Book Series DesignDavid Pearson came to our university for a two day workshop and set us a brief which was to redesign a book series. The series I chose was Fashions of a Decade - 1920, 60 and 80's. The direction I took was to design patterns taken from the clothes and fashions of that era, which would reflect what the book is about, nicely on the covers to appeal to the target audience.
  • LNT Art Direction 'Austerity Measures'
LNT Art Direction 'Austerity Measures'The magazine LNT project also had an art direction brief to go inside the magazine we had created. as a group we decided to focus the topic issue of 'Austerity Measures' on the younger generation of society and how they feel towards austerity. The male models are hiding their identities with sunglasses, coats covering their mouths and tape. They are disguising themselves to remain anonymous. The location is at an abandoned and forgotten RAF base. The models poses are based on the younger generations feelings towards and attitudes based on austerity measures. We shot the images using a DSLR, iPhone and an analogue camera, we decided that we wanted the images to be black and white as this would work really well with the rest of the magazine spreads.
  • LNT Magazine
LNT MagazineThis project was a group project and consisted of designing a new magazine for the market. As a group we decided our target market would be young - 18-30 yr olds both men and women. The content focuses on culture, art, photography, music and influences of fashion in a very contemporary style. We each designed our own spreads and came up with a flat plan, typography guide lines and a grid. We also came up with the name LNT short for 'Lost in Translation' as this covered all areas of sourced content and relevancy to the target audience. My first article spreads focus on fashion designer Christopher Reaburn and his use of recycling materials. I sourced and got permission to use the images and played around with the idea of using the shapes of fabric shown in Raeburn's work, this was to get across his personality and style thought the layouts. The second article spreads focuses on the still life photographer Molly Cranna. I sourced and also got permission to use her images. The images helped to create really nice lines and shapes that show off her work across the double page spreads to the target audience by following her images and style. The third article focuses on the the band Young Fathers and uses their beautiful images of their album. The layout uses playful typography to get their own personality across the layouts.
