Santiago, an old fisherman, ventures into the deep seas to fish. On his fishing hook, he catches a marlin that is two feet longer than his boat. After a two-day and two-night stalemate, the old man finally captures the fish. On his return trip, he encounters countless shark attacks. Despite his best efforts, he is unable to protect the marlin he caught.
