About me
I'm a final year undergraduate studying English Literature and History at Durham University, and am writing my dissertation on women's impact on popular culture in Guangzhou, China. Though the pandemic robbed me of a complete first-year extracurricular experience, I am making the most of my remaining time by writing as Investigations Editor for Palatinate, becoming Coxes Captain for my college's rowing club, Social Secretary for the collegiate volleyball team, and joining the college and university-level orchestras as a first violinist.

Through my lengthy tenure as a News Reporter, I realised that what I truly love writing about is international culture and its manifestations in the city - and my promotion to Investigations Editor will give me more leeway to do so. I'm excited to do long-term pieces into the problems that international students run into at such a "British" university, as well as to expand my skill set and try my hand at editing.

I enjoyed writing weekly editorial pieces on my topics of interest, namely current affairs in Hong Kong, literature, and music. In particular, researching for my opinion pieces on Hong Kong society helped me learn so much more about the city that I grew up in. I am also responsible for editing news reports written by some of the journalist interns at the institution. Reading their work has allowed me to come into close contact with different writing styles and voices, and correcting their work alerts me to flaws in my own voice. I count it as a personal honour that one of the interns decided to extend their contract in order to keep working with me!

I am taking BA English Literature and History, which means I get the best of both worlds (degrees). On the English side, I fell in love with exploring and criticising the theoretical frameworks I use to read texts in second year, and am currently taking a Literary Institutions module which breaks down the physical infrastructure through which literature is made known to us, the readers. Meanwhile, studying History has opened my eyes not to historical facts, but once again to the theoretical frameworks structuring historical narratives. This is why I am writing my dissertation on women's impact and reaction to popular culture in Guangzhou - I hope to challenge conventional narratives which are not only reductive of China's diversity, but also of women's experience in the 20th century.

I achieved a final score of 40/45, with a 7 in Mathematics SL, 6 in English Literature HL, History HL, Economics HL, Biology SL, and Chinese Literature SL; and 3/3 for EE/TOK. During this formative period of my life, I developed a passion for the subjects that I now take in university, critical thinking skills, as well as an appreciation of extracurricular life. I was involved in the school's musical band, choirs, and book club - showing how I have continued to explore my passions and find new hobbies at university level.
