The Slant is a collaborative opinion piece website launched, branded, edited and curated by my colleague and me. It allows anyone to write articles on things they care about, and has a fast-growing readership and community of writers. Responsibilities include commissioning articles; writing articles; editing, formatting and publishing articles; recruiting contributors; allocating roles; managing the website; designing graphics and maintaining a consistent brand; and sharing articles on the site’s social media pages. We have shared this role since the website’s inception in January 2018.

I spent a fascinating four days working with Labour MP and Chair of the Brexit Select Committee, Hilary Benn, and his Parliamentary Assistant, Sally Clark. This entailed a huge number of things, including researching UK food banks, the food crisis in Yemen, and the persecution of the Hazaras in Afghanistan; writing letters and emails to constituents and government ministers, and meeting with a constituent; attending events, including one on the groundbreaking Climate Change Act (2008) introduced by Hilary; sitting in on the Brexit Select Committee, as well as a multitude of Parliamentary debates; and visiting the Bloomberg TV studios in the City of London, witnessing the operations of a major news broadcaster whilst Hilary was interviewed on Brexit. The whole experience was incredible, and I learned so much in such a short space of time.
