About me
I’m a young generation painter and recently graduated doctor of arts. My Ph.D. thesis and personal interests are focused mainly on early and mid-XX century avant-garde and a abstract art. During my ongoing research in this subject area I have been very fortunate to personally meet and work with curators, galleries and artists closely related to this movement back in Poland. Endeavour into preserving the estates and legacy of both living and passed away artists became not only my personal goal but also a daily responsibility. This complex experience combined with theoretical background led me in 2014 to starting my art management and art dealing career.

  • IGNACY BOGDANOWICZ „Krytycy, Plastycy, Koszalin“
    IGNACY BOGDANOWICZ „Krytycy, Plastycy, Koszalin“The gallery KOHANA made its debut with the show Critics, Artists, Koszalin, presenting work by Ignacy Bogdanowicz. The artist, who died in 1989, worked on the Baltic Sea coast and helped organise almost all of the plein air festivals in Osieki. These events took place in 1963-1981, and as the avant-garde painter Henryk Stażewski said, they were a sort of “congress dedicated to art.” The most important Polish artists of the day took part, including Tadeusz Kantor, Natalia LL, Andrzej Dłużniewski, Józef Robakowski and Marian Bogusz, alongside critics such as Wiesław Borowski, Urszula Czartoryska, Ryszard Stanisławski and Hanna Ptaszkowska. The title of the exhibition refers to a moment in one of the Osieki festivals when the participants were divided into “critics”, “artists” and “Koszalin” (referring to a city on the Baltic coast). Bogdanowicz, for whom participation in the plein airs was one of the most important experiences shaping his artistic path, represents this last category. The exhibition was be dedicated to recollecting the work of Bogdanowicz and calling up the artistic atmosphere of that time. The mysterious term “Koszalin” will also be clarified and the appropriateness of this term will be questioned; the lens of history affords some distance. Bogdanowicz’s most representative works will be presented: works that were exceptional against the background of the avant-garde of the day. The artist modernised the concept of relief and it is precisely his two-sided works from the beginning of the 1970s that will be shown at the opening of Kohana Gallery. Bogdanowicz worked with various materials, including waste from the furniture factory in Słupsk.  Ignacy Bogdanowicz (1920-1989) worked in painting, drawing, relief, spatial form, graphics, set design and posters. He was active in organising artistic circles in Słupsk, Koszalin and the central Pomerania region. In 1938 Bogdanowicz studied painting at Stefan Batory University in Vilnius; during the Second World War he was subjected to persecution in the Soviet Union. In 1945 he began to study painting at the Vilnius State Art Institute. He arrived in Poland in 1946, settling in Słupsk. Bogdanowicz helped organize the House of Artistic Work in Ustka and the plein air festivals in Osieki. He was a co-founder of the Polish visual Artists’ Association’s Koszalin branch. In 1974 Bogdanowicz helped create the Nowa Brama Gallery, which operated in Słupsk. His works have been presented in more than 75 shows in Poland and abroad.

These small disturbances animate the painting, they give it depth and open it to the invisible»                                                                    Mieczysław Knut On Friday, April 22, at 6.00 pm Kohan Gallery opened an exhibition of Mieczysław Knut "reticence", which presents the latest works of the artist. At the exhibition was presented ascetic selection of works by Mieczyslaw Knut“s three cycles - closed triptych UMBRAE and two  still on-going; KRYPTÉ and images-icons. UMBRAE from Greek means shadow, and three small images are an etude dedicated to black. Despite the overwhelming superiority of dark color paintings in this exhibition, they are de facto only ones painted with black pigment. In a similarly dark tones, though only apparently black, there are four large paintings from the KRYPTÉ series, which in Greek means something hidden.  The basic color ink is - kind of very dark, deep green. Symbolically, this color refers to the source of life, and for the images to their origin, their source, and more specifically the color, from which they are born. These images are painted on the edge of visibility. We can compare the situation to the feeling when we enter a dark room and the eye slowly begin to see shapes as if they emerged from the darkness. It is similar to those black paintings, which after a while start to reveal something that is hidden. Three of the still nascent series of icons, the paintings of the dignity of the iconic tradition; lime on the boards of oak. Icons Prosoche, Aoratos Eikon and Puros, in typical Knut painterly way link to the Greek qualities and objects, which in turn: perseverance, icons and heat.

    Tycjan Knut "reticence"The exhibition's title refers not only to the kind of painting practiced by Knut, but also to the manner of not-speaking too much about it, leaving this field to fill, due to the principle of "less is more. In his latest works Knut goes beyond the clichés of Polish painting of the 60s and 70s, bending the rules of abstraction, moving away from the rigid principles by combining technology and threads.  Moreover, the artist literally breaks even subject-object relations in the process of seeing images.
  • Noriyo Yoshida "Un-functional Comfort"
    Noriyo Yoshida "Un-functional Comfort"he exhibition will feature installations made from and referring to items of everyday life such as furniture, dishes and kitchen and bathroom accessories. The artist is fascinated by everyday life, form, textures, the materials that surround objects. In Yoshida’s installations, objects change their scale and their properties. Showing them in a new sequence creates a new interpretation for them. The “unfunctional comfort” of the title is an experiment with the scale and the weight of objects. By stripping objects from their utilitarian function, the artist makes an attempt to give them an even more intimate character, closer to humans. Objects known from everyday life, shown in a new arrangement, become objects of contemplation. The residential programme of the Kochański Suwalski Knut Fine Arts Foundation allows artists from outside Poland to carry out an artistic project during a longer stay in Warsaw. As part of the programme, the Foundation provides artists, as needed, with accommodation, work space, materials and funds for travel. Creative residencies are an important element of an artist’s functioning on the art market and co-operation with exhibiting institutions. Each residency carried out by the Foundation is intended to end with the opening of an exhibition in the Kohana Gallery. The Nomura Foundation is a partner in Noriyo Yoshida’s residency.

    Piotr Grabowski "Poison candy (sw00t & opiumistic)"It is Paracelsus who composed the formula for laudanum, a substance which is at the heartof Piotr Grabowski’s latest work. Based on a combination of alcohol and opium, it is saidto be capable of bringing on a state of relatively unbounded happiness. Grabowski has devised a complex arrangement that takes up the entire gallery space, which is focusedon an analysis of the components that make up this formula. Each magical ingredient is described through contemporary works of painting, making use of new technologies andvivid installations.The artist represents the “reality of the background” which moves away from physical experience and illustrates the fact of such a break by creating a virtual web of experiences. Pearl, coral, amber and other valuable substances represent a variety of actions, such asenveloping oneself in luxury, getting deeper into philosophy or taking a trip in search of happiness and fulfillment. Individualized, strictly opposed, disordered concepts definethe ceaseless pursuit of happiness. Commonly, this is, in fact, a feeling that is unattainable because it tends to be so illusory. Every impression of happiness becomes, in turn, replaced by yet another desire for something else. There is no end to this list, which often raisesthe effort to reach such a state to the rank of a life’s purpose. Its attainment is also tied with finding answers to niggling questions, universal ones, and also those relating to one’s mortality. Sometimes, there is the simple escape from all questions.Grabowski bases his work on these primary emotions, a hope for the future underscoredby fraud, desensitization and passivity. The promise of a great holiday, in praise of life (laudare), turned out to be fulfilled at least momentarily, which meant that, ultimately, the promise is lost. The exhibition attempts to capture the moment just before this loss.The ingredients bubble over with visions of voyages to other dimensions, but they arealso visually appealing in and of themselves, which makes being around them a sensual pleasure, a tempting vision of saccharine ecstasy. It’s only the suitcases arranged in thestaged fragment of an airport hall that bring back echoes of detestable waiting and anultimate lack of fulfillment.
