During my time at the University Arts of London, I have gained experience in interviewing various sportsmen and sportswomen. I interviewed individuals such as Hockey Olympic Gold Medallist Nicola White, ex-footballer and former PFA Chairman Clark Carlisle, 2016-17 PFA Women’s Player of the Year Lucy Bronze, ex-Arsenal Women’s and England international Kelly Smith, footballer turned boxer Curtis Woodhouse, St Johnstone’s midfielder Chris Millar, ex-UFC fighter Brad Pickett and Sky Sports Matchroom Boxing’s Isaac Chamberlain.
These interviews were separate and focused on the individual’s sporting and personal career. Some pieces were 300-400 news stories, whereas, others were produced as feature pieces of around 800-1200 words. These articles were conducted for the Elephant and Sport website, which were published and contributed towards my final grade.
By conducting the above interviews, I developed the confidence to ask questions, engage in conversation and ensure all topics were covered. This has also allowed me to gain contacts which shall benefit me going forwards.
Furthermore, I was also involved in video work. This consisted of me producing video packages and filming boxers such as Dillan Whyte and Chris Kongo at Miguel’s Gym in Brixton. Filming these individuals consisted of me asking questions on a one to one basis and recording their training regime. Once the filming was conducted, I edited the whole video package, which resulted in a four-minute video piece. This was published on YouTube.
During my third year at University, I produced a 13,000-word dissertation, which was titled ‘Assessing the impact on Premier League clubs and their fans of rising income from television rights using Arsenal Football Club as a case study’. The main benefit of choosing this topic was that it allowed me to use my contacts from prior work experience.
Contacts such as The Guardian’s Amy Lawrence, ESPN’s Vivek Chaudhary, Arsenal Blogger Tim Stillman and Irish Times’ Ken Early were interviewed for the dissertation due to their extensive knowledge of Arsenal Football Club and the financial side of the game. While working on my dissertation, I developed the skills to analyse, work independently and organise the structure of the work.
