My life has been somewhat of a dyad. One half, with my mother and step father was privileged; a good home with a good education in a nice neighbourhood, dogs, cats, stream in the front garden. The other half with my father was the opposite; a leaking boat moored, but never moving, a bed in a stripped out caravan, constant travel and movement, a marginal existence, surviving where children and teenagers should rarely be. This duality has meant an extreme and diverse experience of humanity. I have relished these opportunities to share ideas and opinions with this humanity and find it infinitely fascinating, from the working man to the tortured artist, to the cabaret act or the financier.
Compounding this has been a lifestyle of moderate hedonism, the trappings of a music-loving, liberal youth who occupied the sleepers between the wrong and right sides of the track. Through this I developed skills in creating and maintaining relationships and slipping social and cultural boundaries, skills that made me so effective in my hospitality and PR roles.
I have always had a love for writing and storytelling, a trait that is compounded by an analytical mind and innate inquisitiveness that, I believe, predisposes me to a career in journalism. With a family heavily involved in show-business, I spent much of my childhood backstage in venues, festivals and street corners around the country, meeting fascinating people. This has given me a unique ability to traverse social boundaries and polarised opinions that has been proved essential throughout my personal and professional life, I just need to opportunity to apply these skills, learn new ones and devote myself entirely to the right business.
