FRA Students assist on X Factor Live Shows - Yasmin KhraishiThursday 27th November 2014, 17:11 "Styling isn’t exactly what I thought it would be like. I thought it was simply choosing out an outfit from different shops and brands/designers and then dressing your client but there is so much more to it. You get given a brief for each week’s show which you then have to create an outfit based around your theme. This week was 80s week and the team went for a 80s punk/rock look with leather jackets and buckled boots to express this. I have done some returns and collections and also learnt about public relation offices and the type of work that they do there like building relationships with press, dealing with the press releases and press packs. I have also discovered that companies and different shops send the stylists a range of clothes which they then decide whether they use or don’t use; from all the returns I’ve learnt where a few of the PR offices are around London. I went to a couple of press meetings in H&M and New Look and saw how all the press works within these retailers. Organisation is a very important aspect as you don’t want the risk of losing something especially on show day. The job is fast paced and you have to do something as carefully but quickly as possible. I have helped organise the office at the fashion hub by sorting out clothes which I helped hang and pack/unpack. I have also helped make a few mood boards by finding inspiration images, when doing this I got to see about the trends and celebrity trends that are in at the moment and a couple inspiration boards on Pinterest which I love as I get so carried away. I’ve assisted one of the costume designers in making hats for the violinists and done the normal backstage preparation for the live shows- getting last minute things, organising the fashion truck and removing labels. Learnt how to some basic fashion things like steaming and a Windsor tie knot. The X Factor so far has been a really good experience and I’m still happy and excited to be part of it. I like being busy and helping out. You get to go to shopping and being in London is definitely a bonus to it all as everything is accessible. I’ve learnt that with being a stylist, your client doesn’t always like what they were chosen so you have to learn to deal with the difficulties of situations like this and how to deal with them professionally. I love seeing the contestants being so passionate about what they’re doing and it’s lovely to meet them all and the backstage team; constant interaction with people is a good way to gain people skills and confidence and I also love taking on responsibility. It’s a really nice atmosphere to be surrounded by and a privilege to have been chosen and part of the whole experience." Yasmin Khraishi
