After nearly 7 years of running my own business, what can make me more attractive to a recruiter?

I'm pivoting back to employment, in a new country no-less, and it's been a long time since I worked for someone else.

When you're running your own business it's hard to clearly see your skills, since you just have to do everything and it's just what showing up every day looks like.

I hear mixed things, some people say it's fantastic experience and I should have no problems finding working - others say it might be quite difficult to break back into working for someone else. I'd love to hear some more takes on the experience on transitioning back into employment.

  • I love talking to colleagues and candidates who have previous experience of running their own businesses. They often have really strong skills in areas like proactivity, strong judgement, being able to make smart decisions without having every last piece of information to hand, navigating ambiguous situations, etc.

I do think that people with this kind of background may be more likely to find success when they move into a full-time role that offers a lot of autonomy, vs. the kind of company culture that's very top down and you get told what to do, so that could be something to factor in when you're considering potential employers.

Good luck - I'm also happy to chat more if you like. I moved from running my own (freelance) business into a full-time role back in 2016, and it's worked out well.
  • Hi Dan, I think that having had your own business would be an incredible asset to any company within employment, what sort of work are you currently looking for? Also, would you be open to not going back into employment for another business opportunity but within the global marketing sector (no previous experience necessary)? If so I’d love to have a chat let me know if you be open to having a chat :)
