An article I feel every designer should read: "5 Things Designers Should Spend Time On Besides Your Design Portfolio" by Christian Beck

This article really resonated with me because I am in the position of finding work whilst trying to hone my portfolio and write amazing cover letters to get myself noticed. I worry that my portfolio will not do me justice and that the best qualities I have to offer an employer are my soft-skills (communication, problem-solving, etc). These cannot always be translated into pretty graphics within a portfolio so easily.

Beck highlights that,
'Design portfolios are overrated ... we put entirely too much emphasis on their value to a student’s job aspirations, or a designer’s career success.'

Read the full article here and give some claps if it resonates with you too. Further, I'd love to read your thoughts on this.

  • Thanks for this Ben! Really good read, don't see many of these kind of tips posts push a focus on writing for designers, think that's a really interesting point, certainly one I'm going to think about!
