Any creatives remember a time when money has ever held you back?

Hi! I’m Monique and I have an insane passion for creating films and exploring unique concepts. I’m sure all of us creatives can relate to a time when money has been something that has held us back from achieving our goals. I’ve created a fundraising page to help me start up my career in filmmaking because I don’t want money to be the only thing holding me back from my aspirations. The money would go towards filming equipment and editing software. Any help would massively appreciated :))

  • @christopher conway That’s amazing advice, which I’ll definitely take up. Thank you so much for all of your time and help today. Have a lovely rest of your day! :))
  • Ok so I was on my phone and clicking the link keeps me inside The Dots.

When I typed the link in my browser it showed your funding page which explains yourself.

You could also ask for equipment donations rather than cash. A lot of film makers hold onto older (not ancient) equipment that they might donate. This might also give you some connections.

DaVinci resolve from Blackmagic design is a brilliant piece of software for editing, sound, special effects etc. They use it in some Hollywood films. In my opinion, much better than Premiere Pro. It’s also free to download (don’t think free means bad, they make money from hardware sales so giving the software for free is beneficial to their strategy).
  • @christopher conway Hi Christopher. That’s really helpful feedback, thank you! I’ve made big adjustments to my fundraising page based on your advice and I can definitely see how at first, I wasn’t very clear on how it would help me and the community. I’ve tried to make it a lot more concise and only relevant to filming now. Do you think that it works better now? Thank you for all your help :))
  • Clicking on your Fund me link just goes to your profile page which shows projects you are involved with. It doesn’t explain how or why to fund you.

Your post talked about your filmmaking aspirations but you replied in what seemed like your acting career.

It’s just not very well defined or clear why some who would be inclined to fund you, would do so. What are you hoping to achieve that would help you, and possible others around you, or the community for the greater good.
  • @christopher conway I go to a performing arts school and I’m around a lot of theatre actors who are all eager to join the industry and one massive issue they have it having to spend money on things like headshots or having no reel material. Im someone who loves to collaborate with people all of the time so with the right equipment, I could also offer them free or very low price headshots and offer to write a short film that suits them and create films for reel material to help them boost their careers.
  • @christopher conway Hi Christopher! Thanks so much for your question. I don’t believe that anyone is inclined to give anyone money. However, in the arts, a lot of people are held back due to money reasons and this puts a lot of people at a disadvantage. I’ve always wished that there was a way where those people could receive help - whether that be through any small donations - so that they can have a chance too. I’m still young right now, but I hope that when I grow older I can reach a position where I can help young creatives to push start their career as well.
