  • Hi Diana, are you looking to get employment as a interior home stylist or do it self-employed? It is quite a big career change and it would be only be normal that it would take some time (6-12 months) for you find your feet.

I would either look for a job in interior design for the time being while you build your network and experience in the industry, or start building your brand on the side (without quitting your job) and do the interior work on weekends. Do that until you have figured out a way to consistently get new clients for paid work. It's a very fragmented industry and differentiating yourself will be key.

    Good luck with it!
  • Hi Diana,

Before making the move from Fashion into film making, I researched production companies that made films I liked and got in touch with them to complete some work experince, using my annual leave to do this whilst in full time work. This allowed me to get a feel for my new industry and if it was right for me, and to start building contacts that I could use later for work.

Additionally I saved 6 months worth of money before quitting my job to allowing myself the financial breathing space to assist on projects at a very junior level in order to gain a portfolio and more contacts. The thinikng being that if this didnt work out, I had all the necessary skills to get a similar job/position/income in my previous field.

Also consider going to interior fairs so you can meet stylists and companies. And advancing any particular skills you may need by completing evening/ online classes.

And in the meantime, build your moodboods so you have something visual to show people - this will indcate what type of aesthetic and deisgn profile you have.

    Hope this was helpful.
