Any tips for transferring into a career in the art department for film/tv?

I have a background in architecture & interiors and seem to have all the relevant software skills to transfer into the art department for film & tv however I am finding it very difficult as it seems to be an industry based on who you know.

The thing at the moment that seems to be letting me down is having no experience on set - does anyone have any tips how to approach production designers/art directors and the best places to contact them?

Many thanks in advance!

  • @Ross McClure Hey Ross,
Thanks so much for your reply and advice, will definitely reach out to Camberwell Studios!
Your Runner role suggestion is a great idea as I can sometimes find it overwhelming/scary trying to navigate into an industry I have no clue about.
Once again thanks so much for the advice !
  • Hi Nadina

First up, great work on getting to your current point with all these brilliant skills. Sounds like you are ready for the next step.

The filmmaking industry is definitely one in which who you know makes a huge difference. However I wouldn't let that hold you back!

A couple of years ago I moved from London to Barcelona. When I got here I worked as a production assistant on some short films simply to meet people. I'm a producer/director/editor for short form content but I knew that this was the quickest way to meet new people and get on set, rather than trying to get those higher up roles straight away. I met some cool people who I still work with today.

Right now this is tricky due to the pandemic but I would seriously consider finding a production you can work on as a PA/Runner. If you haven't been on sets before it really helps to work out the hierarchy of the crew and to see how each department works with each other.

If you are enthusiastic and quick to learn, you will immediately make an impact and people will want to have you work with them again :)

Another thing to think about would be to approach film studios (big and small) and see if they can put you in touch with productions that require set design. There are lots in London that regularly shoot music videos and commercials - something worth considering as they are often quick turnaround projects that need people to just smash out the work.

You could try Camberwell Studios - I've shot various things there in the past and they have a crew list you could ask about too. Not sure they list art department roles but just ask and see what they say.

Lastly, I think it's worth reaching out to art directors and production designers here on The Dots. Lots of people will be busy but you mind find someone who has a quiet period with work and is looking for someone to add to their team.

    Good luck!
