Anyone have advice or tips on starting a music blog?

  • Hey, I see all the replies to this and think they contain some great content and context. I wanted to just add a handful of thoughts to the mix.

    - LinkedIn is underrated for music blogs, especially as there is as much creative demand for creatives in the industry as well as out of it.

    - Making friends and cross-pollinating your audience with other smaller blogs that you know will create a content lattice that will boost reach for everyone involved. It's always good to travel with allies!

    - And lastly, take the first step and it doesn't have to be polished or perfect. That is what experience over time is for!

Best of luck and hope that brings value to you,

    Kenny
  • I've been running https://prvnce.com for 7 years now, loads of advice if you want it - drop me a line at prvnce@gmail.com if you have any specific questions or indeed want to get involved!
  • @Stefan D. Paul thanks Stefan for the example that blogs aesthetics are very captivating and I like how they introduced themselves, that’s really important. I need to think about how I’m going to present myself to the audience and if I want my face to be in it. Great advice!
  • Hey Claudia,

I think the one thing that I would do if I'd be to start a music blog would be to find an engaging theme, thus avoiding creating 'just another blog'.

As an example, there is this Canadian blog that stands out to me which does exactly that: they use a monochrome theme, wide pictures with a subtle grainy aspect and quite a minimalistic approach overall, but very aestethically pleasing and engaging (at least to me it is!).

Here's a link. Let me know what you think!

  • @Sêan Reid Yes I have thought about this, I will have to be a master of all traits in the beginning and I have an office job already, so I need to be able to balance my time. Being realistic is very important because a mass audience reading your blog post doesn't just appear overnight. Thank you!
  • Thank you @Carrey Francis , those are really good points for me to think about and will help me think about what I want to achieve with the blog. You brought up a lot of key points I really appreciate it :)
  • @Daniel Shute Thank you that is great, because I want to focus mainly on reviews and my area is surrounding by universities that are bound to be packed with upcoming talent. Really good advice appreciate it!
  • Like @Carrey Francis said, have an aim but I would add be realistic. Unless you've got good connections already, you're not going to have access to major artists.

How can your blog stand out? What are similar blogs doing and how can you improve their ideas?

Speaking from experience, try and retain your love for music otherwise you'll start to find blogging about music a chore and will lose enthuaism for it.

Depending on the size of your blog (or how big you want it to be), you have to be prepared to wear a lot of different hats; content creator, admin, editor, analysis etc.
  • It depends with the goal(s) you'd like to achieve with the blog.

You may want to promote your scene or help consumers find good music or just share your experience as an enthusiast.

Either way, you have to follow the musicians or better still, the event promotors and studios to help you with the What, when, where and Who?

Once you have that, you may want to think about your actual content. If you're going to write and whether you will also have photos/videos.

There are a different angles you can consider; reviews of live music events, reviews of new releases or updates on upcoming events. You can also interview different industry stakeholders and activists; there are many choices and its all yours.

    Good luck!
  • Not that I've made a massive start on it myself, but when I began doing bits of simialr writing, I tried reaching out to lots of local musicians and ensembles in the local area that might have wanted free reviews done for their recent releases.
I went to local bars in London to see artists play and wrote pieces on my experience and thoughts the following day.
Just doing little and lots to really get a feel for where you want your writing to go.
