Apparently, I am too old to be an 'emerging' artist...?

It seems there are age limits on a lot of funding these days that deliberately cuts out over the 25s (I am over 30 so I fall into the category of 'Suuuuper old').

Are there funds for people like me looking to try and start again in the Art world?

  • @Alexandra (Lex) Hearth I would love to, but the 'Arts Council' is 'Arts Council England'.
I have to go to the ironically named 'Creative Scotland' for an equivalent. They are overwhelmed with requests and underfunded. They also make their funding process very difficult.
  • I see Arts Council has already been recommended! :-) That's always a good place to start. The Government also has a grants finder. Much of this is for corporate organisations, however, there are occasionally creative opportunities: https://www.gov.uk/business-finance-support
  • you’re never too old to express yourself. You might be too old to be a trendy pop start that lasts for a year or two and those get robbed by the label anyway. Don’t worry, keep creating 😁✌🏽
  • Yes it seems agism is another issue for us to contend with.. As an emerging artist myself as I only started pursuing painting a few years ago I find the best way is to avoid giving your age or have it on a need to know basis. One thing about being an artist is you can literally do it and be good at it at any age !
  • I feel exactly the same. I know young people need support but what about the older people who don't find themselves & try a new career path until later on in life. They need support too. It's something I have struggled with alot over these last 2 years.
  • I’ve been having this exact issue since I turned 25.. suddenly I’m not eligible for anything, it’s a shame.
  • I entered art school as a career change mature student and having now qualified find i am still classed as an emerging artist 4 years later, i have been informed that its not agest but its a gallerist term for someone who is developing an art practice based on a stroing body of work and or work history that has helped to define a themnatic body of work, which is action reaserch based.
Many recent uni students are emerging artists based on the body of worth that they produce which is the level of about 10 full years as a proffessional artist.

Most art gallerys prefer to accept promote those over 45 yrs as they are considered stayers with web siote body of work followers and can produce very high quality artwork which will last for over 100 yrs.

All artists work until in the 90,s or until they fall off a bridge moving backwards...
