Are print portfolios still relevant in photography?

For an article I'm writing about physical print portfolios, I'd love to hear thoughts from both photographers and commissioners on print portfolios.

Do they still exist? Do artists still bring them in/send physical mail to potential commissioners? Is it a nice surprise when it happens or just inconvenient?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Ameena

I had to make one when I graduated from my Photography scool, it's been over 2,5 years and I have not once used it!
I love how it looks but printing new pages when I produce new work is really expensive, and all of my clients have already had a look at my socials and website when I meet up with them.

    Hope that helps x
  • Hi Ameena,

I would say it a nice to have not a must. Don't get hang up on if you can't afford it at the moment but if you have budget for it does worth to send it for your favourite clients (wannabes). But if you do pay special attention for it and do a bit of unusual binding / way you organize etc. so it should feel very very special.
  • I would say yes to print folios. Prints will always look better than on a screen, it also shows that you can produce constant high quality images.
  • Hey Ameena,

I know some photographers still send print portfolios but are very selective and limit who they send them to, and spend a lot of time getting them right. Apparently it works well in fact, getting them good consistent business with clients they want to work with.
