Are you a Curator or have done a Curatorial master's degree? I'm looking for some advice! (New Curators programme)

Hi everyone, I'm applying to the New Curators training programme and really want to get in... but I think I need some pointers from people who are from the industry.

Have you got any tips for applying for a curatorial master's degree when you don't have direct curatorial experience?

What kind of people would they be looking for?

I'm not sure if these questions are specific enough, but I'm just trying to gather information to give myself the best chance at getting through to the next round! Any general advice is highly appreciated!

  • @Daniel Hawley-Lingham Thanks, Daniel, I appreciate the time you took to respond. You're right, I think putting together the application is probably the best first move. Fingers crossed that it all works out. Thanks again!
  • ok - I think I have found the training pgroamme you are referring to and have had a look at the FAQs they advise you to read before applying. This covers quite a number of elements including some eligability criteria, but not all. Some of that is not explicit, particularly around socio-economic background assessment. That aside, you are given some indication of what they are looking for:

    1. This is a postgraduate level programme but is not accredited so you can't say you have Masters after completing it.
    2. It is a paid opportunity for 12 places, so might be very competitive.
    3. They welcome applicants with either non-academic backgrounds or non-arts academic based qualifications including MAs, but you will be expcted to demonstrate your real and possibly tabgible interest in curating.

There is more detail in the FAQs but from what you have said I would think you need to demonstate experience and interest in art, art history, some theory and ideas around curation. You may well have some of this already depending on what you have been doing.

It is difficult to give specific advise without knowing more about you and your experience. My general advise would be to start putting together your application as best you can - you will need a CV - then look for some input on refining/honing it.

Looks like an amazing and rare opportunity. Good luck
