  • You might be better off writing for yourself, rather than trying to find people who will ask you to do it for free. Most editors will be happy to see stuff on a Medium or Substack from new writers.

There are some non-paying arts pubs out there, particulaly Daily Art Magazine, that you might send stuff to if you don't feel confident pitching paying pubs. Though, working for free is never advised, regardless of where you are in your career.

Otherwise, why not get in touch with and/or pitch actual arts pubs? Hyperallergic, Burlington, Apollo (which is owned by the Spectator, so ick), and Print come to mind immediately as places that take in unsolicited pitches. Other pubs might have arts sections that take in pitches.

Writing about stuff you dig rather than finding free work on The Dots will give you a better portfolio, too. So, be confident and don't seek out weird grifters on here.
