As a photographer what's the best way to get your name out there ? Any advice welcomed :)

Emailing magazines ? Social media ? Making new connections / word of mouth ? Something else ?

  • I would take a listen to an episode of this brilliant podcast, The Messy Truth, an episode featuring a photo director of the New York times.

From about 31 mins in, very good points about what to think about when it comes to pitching to magazines, put more widely, what point of you, you’re trying to put across with your work. Believe me, I’m still working on this myself.
  • I’d advocate new connections too, but I’m mostly an offline networker. I find that it has a much higher return on the investment because online platforms (unless tailored for networking like this one) push you towards building an audience instead, and you’d rather have a key few well-connected people you can nurture real relationships with that will tell others about you than a lot of eyes that lead to no work :) pitching is good too but you have to be persistent with it and be seen a lot before your name sticks, and there’s a lot more competition in photoeditors’ inboxes since that’s their job. If you can catch someone in other settings and they like you you’re a little ahead of the curve in pitching too. Good luck :)
  • @Kid Circus thanks so much for taking the time to reply ! I take portraits mostly but I put my own unique spin on it , this is my portfolio to give you a better idea. Yep , i've pitched to some magazines before but not had many responses , I think the thing I struggle with most is catergorising what kind of photography it is I actually do as I just enjoy taking pictures of any and everything I find pleasing to the eye ( I guess it's kind of documentary in a way) but I want to start making money from it .. but really don't know how to get into it.
  • It kinda depends, tbh.
I mean…what kind of work do you want to be known for? Do you have any solid bodies of work/personal projects that you have already that you could pitch to magazines? Have you researched the magazines you like to see if what you have could be a fit? I’d ABSOLUTELY advocate making new connections, across all the socials you can think of, Insta, Linkedin, here. Think of the kind of creatives you’d like to work with and take it from there. I mean if you wanna do more fashion photography, connect with more makeup artists, stylists, hairstylists and so on…
