Do you enjoy music from other cultures/in other languages?

Music and art are great mediums of expression and they can expose us to so many different ways of thinking.

Many bilingual people probably grow up listening to music in more than one language, and there is so much access to other parts of the world through our digital age!

Recently, Coke Studio Season 14 was released in Pakistan and received really positive reviews from around the world. As an artist, I decided to contribute to the celebration of multi-culturalism and the beauty of Pakistani heritage.

One of the songs I chose was 'Pasoori' - a song that went viral across South Asia as soon as it was released.

Inspired by Mucha/Art nouveau posters, I combined the Western elements with Asian elements to create a piece about the metaphorical death and rebirth that occurs through suffering. The concept that one can learn to dance through the pain because fire not only destroys, it also creates and cleanses.

If you're interested in exploring other cultures and languages, definitely check it out for yourself!

  • @Mohamed Omer That's awesome! Folk music is great for understanding other cultures =D
  • I grew up in London but moved to Ireland for a few years. Fell in love with Irish folk music after hearing it in local markets!
  • @Tai Makhubele Haha, I love that!

It's pretty cool how not only are the stories and animation amazing, you can get a great playlist out of animes too (I'm sure your cat loves hearing them!)
  • @Keva Epale Thank you for your kind words! I'm so glad you like my work!

I also grew up listening to many different genres and languages - it really expanded my understanding of narratives and storytelling. It's nice to hear someone else shares this experience =D

I will definitely check out your link!
  • The amount of anime music that I find myself just randomly singing to my cat is insane.
  • @I Tanvir I resonate with your question and claim. I navigate so many different music references from French, English UK, US, indian, Turkish, Korean, Thai, Japanese.. and I am always curious. Music is a language that goes beyons territory and it has inspired my work at some point.

Your illustrations are lovely, Pansoori hasa lot of Mucha's vibe. An art deco modern take on Indian culture. Keep on!
Some would make great book covers by the way!
