Doing a fashion research project. Id love to gather as many opinions as possible on the following - what do you think makes a good stylist?

  • A good stylist is someone who can use 1 garment to come up with many different outfit ideas. For example, turning an oversized shirt into a "dress" by adding a belt , or turning the shirt into a "jacket" by putting it over a camisole paired with jeans. A good stylist also carefully thinks about what flatters the body shape, and what makes their client look and feel confident. They don't follow trends. Rather they promote individual style and think more about the context behind wearing clothes/accessories.
  • Hi Dolsie,
Depends on what the product is and who is selling it. Whether it’s in keeping with current style trends and the individuals brand/companies guidelines too. What are the selling features of the garment/product can it be upsold? How would you style a plain tee? Over a patterned fabric. Is it being styled on a model or on a mannequin? Knowledge of a garments fit/hang. Will a HMUA be involved, how is it going to be lit and photographed? Where and how will the image be used?

I would argue a key component for a good stylist is having a bucket load of accessories, jewellery, glasses, footwear.

    A lint roller!
Being able to use a steamer! ( I’m forever removing creases and dust )
