Freelance Writers - where do you get most of your client base from?

And is it worth getting some business cards printed to sprinkle around? Or nah?

  • @Marco Rola thanks so much Marco! I am in that weird little unpaid test article phase currently and I’m looking forward to an eventual (somewhat) steady stream of clients. Thank you!
  • referrals! i try pitching blind every time it goes quiet but I can't honestly remember it working... smaller design houses can be good as they don't often have in-house writers but as Asher says, network, network, network....
  • I was quite lucky that I spent some time around a lot of business owners a couple of years ago. I tapped into their network via referrals. I've also pitched for projects on YunoJuno, The Dots and directly via email.
Also, get talking to designers, art directors animators etc. they sometimes have big projects and need someone to write for them.

Upwork is brutally competitive as people tend to compete on price more, but it can be useful.

Not sure about business cards, but if you are going to use them, go off piste with the design so that it's memorable.

    Hope this helps
  • Hi Hannah,

Referrals. That's the ideal world, when your work speaks for you and you grow past the "unpaid test article" phase.

However, if you already have a niche, you can pitch directly to businesses and - surprisingly - even find new valuable connections on platforms such as Upwork (which I'm not a fan of, but it has brought business, nevertheless).

    Hope it helps! :)

    Best of luck,

    M
