Have anybody noticed that job requirement for Graphic Designers has reduced and there is more demand for digital designers?

Nowdays there seems to be more job openings and requirements for UI/UX then traditional graphic designers (Branding/ Packaging). Also there is a huge gape in terms of payscale. Can anybody share some thoughts here.

  • I definitely feel there is a massive change in demand, for at least more than 5 years now. When I was applying for jobs as far back as 2013-2016, a lot of jobs stated that you needed to have some web design/coding experience as well.

I taught myself HTML & CSS back in 2015 after I left my job as a chef & built my own portfolio website & paid for the hosting for 3 years (now defunct). After some time, it got to a point where I just became frustrated at staring at code all day. I had to remind myself that I was a designer, not a coder.

As for UI/UX, the more I look at it, the more I realise its just basic "icon"-like graphic design, produced by the same digital tools e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator. The only difference is that the term "UI/UX" has been labelled to this design process, & the thinking process is quite different from say, a packaging design project.

At the end of the day, I know my value & am proud of my illustration style & the influences that have made me the artist I am. I know what I bring to the table, & if anyone ever asked me to produce UI icons, I would definitely do my best at it - I just wouldn't call it "UI" design, just graphic design.
  • I think jobs are not as available as the opportunity to be creative and enterprisal. You can be anything you want but providing value in your industry is the real question we have to ask ourselves. Many freelancers already understand the market for their creativity/productivity.
  • I’ve noticed this too. For someone with more print based skills it’s making it tougher for me to apply for jobs. Saying that though, with the digital age we’re currently living in, it’s expected that we need to adapt and update our skill sets, I’m afraid.
