Having worked as a designer for over 20 years, would taking an artworker job lessen the chance getting another designer job in future?
Artworking is one of my great strengths so I'm confident I can do an artworker job well, a lot of work in the last few years has been working to guidelines, retouching etc – it's a pertinent question at the moment as I'm facing redundancy from April so do need something to go into then ideally

- Thanks for the replies everyone, it's much appreciated!
- I wouldn't hesitate to take the position. And I certainly don't believe it would have any negative impact on any future career movement. Completely the opposite I'd say, and who's to say that position won't come with a wealth of opportunities to progress into more design-related projects. All the best if you decide to take the role.
- I wouldn’t even think twice about it, just make sure to learn from the whole experience. Will it give you a better understanding of materials and tech? More knowledge of what is possible through print or digital processes? Will you work on details with a keener eye or understand campaign rollouts a little more broadly? All of these are solid additions to a designer’s toolkit and would never harm your prospects but arguable make you more employable as a problem solver.Personally, I love design, artworking, packaging and even the dreaded Powerpoint as much as one another. Everything has a place :)
- I’d like to share a slightly different take on this. The exact same thing happened to me and I took the job. Unfortunately I ended up stuck. If you take the artwork role, continue with some freelance design work on the side to keep for your portfolio. I found that this lack of new design work in my folder would hold me back.
