Hello! Does anyone have any tips on creating content as a freelancer for your portfolio?

As I'm fairly new to freelance I haven't got many examples of client work, is it worth making mock designs for brands to put on my website if it takes time away from looking for work?

  • Self-initiate projects and not just at the beginning of your career but throughout, whenever you have a lull in projects. Don't label them as personal projects, treat them from their inception as professional jobs and present them as such.
  • Hi Leo,
I would say that it's definitely worth having some cool personal projects in your portfolio to show your best skills.
Keep in mind the type of clients or jobs you are looking for and what kind of projects will they be searching in your portfolio > editorial illustration, illustrative branding, poster artwork, character design etc.
Set yourself up a brief, a message or problem to solve and have fun with the project.

    Best of luck and inspiration!
  • Mock ups are a great way to show personal work that could be applied to client work! Create work that is relatable but also something you're passionate about. Also, animated images really draw people in compared to still images on a portfolio.
