Hello. I am a new junior graphic designer. Was just wondering if anyone could give me some tips with obtaining my first job?

I previously studied as a 2D Animator and have very recently finished a 1 Year Master degree in Graphic Communication.

  • How funny! The very next post on the home page is this

  • Hey Thomas :)

You can use https://www.briefbox.me/ to create more projects to add to your portfolio. Like an advertising campaign showcasing your skills if you're applying for a role within advertising etc.

My design manager told me the reason why she employed me as a junior designer was because of my enthusiasm for design, even though there were more qualified candidates with more experience, luckily she went with me.

When you start your new job they won't expect you to know everything at a junior level and will want to see that you can collaborate, work well with others and take criticism. You could post a shout out on The Dots calling for other junior designers to collaborate on a project together. You're certainly not alone, there are lots of junior designers out there wanting to develop their portfolio, not yet having had the chane to work on real industry projects.

Have faith in yourself and don't give up :) I'm sure you'll get the job you want soon enough

  • My advice is to work backwards from the problem. Look for relevant job ads and read their specs. See what kind of skills they ask for and what responsibilities they outline, then work to fill those gaps through personal or freelance projects.

Networking on the Dots can be a godsend too (thanks Pip!). I highly recommend going back to this recording: https://the-dots.com/projects/webinar-recording-how-to-find-a-mentor-maintain-the-relationship-with-founder-pip-jamieson-463212

Use the Dots to engage with folks who hold the roles that might be hiring or interviewing you in the future - marketing managers, heads of design, creative directors. If you look through my profile, you'll notice I direct a lot of questions towards them, and people here have shared some great industry tips and expertise that dispels myths, can help you identify your weaknesses, and helps you put your best foot forward. Seek feedback on your work but also how you present it.

Other than that, have patience and be prepared all this optimising will be a process you have to commit to. It's a pretty tough time for everyone right now, but don't get discouraged.

If you have any questions, feel free to connect and ask (and others as well!), I'm a fellow junior but it's been a couple years so I'll pass on what I can :-)
  • Hi Thomas, Agree with the below and start to create your online presence. The Dots webinars are really good to help with your profile and how you can start connecting with agencies and people in the industry. I found Nikky Lyle's portfolio advice really helpful too. https://guides.nikkylyle.com
