Hello! I just published a re-design of one of my favourite books. Does anyone have a minute to share constructive feedback? Thank you!

  • @Joana Reis YES! I like this a lot, nice work. I think it is much more legible and neat. Looking forward to seeing the front cover too. Don't rush it, trial and error is the best way to go forward :)
  • @Laura Bertinelli Hey Laura! I've updated the spine design. It is the 3rd picture. I also tried changing the title font but it came out worse. I will keep trying till I get it right :)
  • @Miriana Greco That is a great idea. I will try that out :) Yesterday I've posted a new spine design. Hopefully, it looks better like this :) https://joanareis.myportfolio.com/book-cover-re-design
Thank you so much for your help!!
  • Hey there, the illustration is really great!
Agree with the people that commented before, for the lettering in the front to be bigger so that the patter underneath can be highlighted better.

As a reader, I often do the neck-bent thing in the bookstores to read the title on the spine. So it would be helpful if the spine can be distinguishable from other books. Have you tried applying the pattern on the background of the spine while keeping the lettering in white? :)
  • @Laura Bertinelli I've created this one myself with Procreate. I will try to change it a bit more. Maybe try to make it bolder like you suggested :)
  • @Joana Reis you are welcome! I am glad I was helpful.

I think it could be a fun task to try and use your own handwriting for the title, or try and modify an existing font. It will add personality and it will look less like 'a font just off the shelf' :)
  • @Laura Bertinelli That is so helpful! I'm starting out designing type, so I don't know much about it. You are right! I'm going to make all those corrections! thank you so much, Laura!
  • @Gemma Buss That is such a great feedback. Thank you so much. :) I will work on it and follow your suggestions.
  • @Isaac Coppin Omg. That is such a great idea. I didn't think about it like that but now i'm thinking of testing that idea. thank you so much. :)
  • Hi Joana!

I really like it, it is very well presented and looks great!

I agree with the below, the illustrated pattern gets a bit lost within the text. Perhaps you could choose a chunkier typeface for the title (or even hand-letter it yourself!)? That would also mean that the author's name can be in its own typeface, which would make it stand out more.

On the spine, you could remove the pattern from the title so you can have a smaller size for the text and not having to give up on legibility.

Two points from a type-nerd point of view:
    - I always suggest avoiding using Uppercaps initials when the word is set in small caps. It doesn't really make sense, either keep all at the same caps, or use uppercase + lowercase! :)
    - on the back, remove the hyphenation in Saunders, you have room to keep the word all in one line!
The back cover is really neat and elegant, well done!!

    Hope this helps,
    Laura x
  • Nice work Joana! Is the black front cover meant to be a sleeve with the pattern behind it?
  • Lovely simplistic design and a great quirky font!

Think about perhaps making the illustrations bigger inside of the text so they're clearer and allows the text to pop from the dark background, at the moment it's a little unclear what the illustrations are. May be worth making the text bigger or font slightly thicker as well to make the title a bit easier to read :)

    Hope this helps!
