Hello! I’m making my final major project and I need some help from all the people who have experienced any body image issues.

My FMP topic is body image and I’m looking for people’s experiences with their body image/self acceptance (if you have reached that).

As someone who has BDD, it is really hard for me to think positively about my body, especially seeing so many unrealistic expectations on social media. However, so far I have received a few stories which relate to the same problems as mine, and it made me realize that we all deal with similar things and it has to be talked about as it is so common.

so I’m thinking of making (?) a book and an app, both sharing PERSONAL experiences which would make people feel like they are not alone with such issues. Also, I’m planning to include a lot of stories which would inspire people to work on their self love and accept themselves.

If you have anything to share with me, PLEASE do, as every experience and opinion is valuable for me!

Feel free to share your experience with me on here or my instagram: evelinabarz.

Thank you so much and have a nice day!!

  • Hi I’d love to help. I’ve got body issues like anyone else however mine have always come from the fact I’m on the skinnier side. I’ve had a lot of issues with my health in the past (ibs, celiac disease) which has led to weight loss so whenever I loose any weight or just see myself in my normal smaller shape always makes me sad but then I always feel shit that it makes me sad Bc I know so many girls want to be on the skinny side! Email is martharosekelly@hotmail.co.uk ❤️❤️
  • @Evelina Barzdaite I understand where your coming from. Men and women treat their bodies differently and have different attitudes. However women have for centuries have had their appereance defined by men, you can look at women painted by men in art, which a women’s body was portrayed for the male gaze.

Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf, reason I suggest you read that book is will answer: “body positivity campaigns etc only focus on women” if you look at targeted ads towards women it’s about buying a product to enhance their appearance to fit in a society. There are good campaigns that counter act those adverts curated/owned by men to define how women should look to sell. And the power which men have over society “man have used women’s “beauty” as a form of currency in circulation among men”. Here are some names Philip Green owns Topshop many other fashion brands, Condé Nast that owns VOGUE the CEOs are men have the power over the direction of the magazine. Absolutely Fashion: Inside British Vogue watch part of the episode which the CEOs shut down the front cover because they don’t like it. source: https://youtu.be/kpQwH_Rnkrk?t=3271

Sure men can go through a subconscious body, however for women it’s different as a mans body isn’t owned by society the same way a womans is owned by society.

I can’t really break down the Beauty Myth, it will make you rethink and be a great research to your FMP.

Viviane Sassen would be a good to look way she captures both men and women in way that is artistic makes you the respect the body without seeing the head of the body.
  • @Luke Freeman I am doing this project focusing on not only women but everyone, as the social (and mass) media has a certain expectation for everyone. Also while doing my research, I noticed that most of body positivity campaigns etc only focus on women while men get similar problems (for example, nowadays we can notice plus size models and so on, and we as a society getting used to see them, however, how come I never saw plus size male model?), so I believe such issue is not really talked about and it is a problem too (maybe not as big as it is with women but it exists!). :) but yeah, thank you so much, I will check it out!!
  • Being a man, I can’t really shed light on the subject matter as it fall into the line of “manspanling”.

Recommend the Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf --- read at univeristy and still read now and then.

The book is written based on womens (old and young) behaviours to their bodies, by sectors of society. It’s more as an impowerment to women in feminism construction.

Guerrilla Girls contribution to women represented by men in the art world is a great insight. Will make you want to deface masterpeices by male artist for exploiting the female form and disscusing womens bodies as a mear object.

Will have to digg through my arts and cultural studies if I can think of anything else.
