Hey everyone. Wanted to speak to someone who has made a film or content over zoom. Have a few questions if you don’t mind?

  • @James Worsley just watched. Really liked the way you use visuals to introduce each country with the zoom clips. Great film. Different question. Did you need permissions to use the clips of Boris's national lockdown speech? This is so helpful by the way, really appreciate your advice
  • @Monique Needham We just used the record feature within Zoom, and when the audio fizzled abit because of connection issues we just embraced it. I guess it depends on how you want the final result to look. We resized windows so they were all the same size in our film (either portrait or landscape). You can see the film here: https://vimeo.com/450868848
  • @Ieuan Coombs One more thing I forgot to mention! I said one thing wrong in my original post. I didn't use the audio from quicktime but from the zoom video itself that I recorded. So it did come in use that way! I appreicate that's a lot of information and might be a bit confusing- if you need any more qs or anything clarifying just let me know.
  • @Monique Needham I did use the zoom recording function- but then in the edit I found that I didn't need it. I think quicktime was slightly better resolution wise, and it kept things consistent quality wise to stay with the quicktime- rather than cut in between the zoom and the quicktime. For the "wides"- where all three characters singles are on screen- I just edited the individual quicktimes' placement on the screen, and made the clips physcially smaller. When it was the characters' "singles" I just had the indiviudal quicktime films take up the whole screen. I didn't actually have an issue with the internet connection on the zoom video I recorded, but I didn't end up using it anyway.

    Hope that helps!

  • @Ieuan Coombs Super super helpful. Out of curiosity - did you not use the zoom recording feature for a reason? Did you find the Quicktime filmed it at better quality as you were not relying on the internet connection. Thank you so much x
  • Hey Monique! I made a short doc during lockdown 1: https://vimeo.com/463352245 and made a bunch of shorts since then. best software I've come across is OBS, it doesn't take up as much RAM as Quicktime so my laptop didn't make the terrible fan noises. It's a bit more complex than quicktime, but quite easy. Zoom allows you to split all sound sources and download them separately.

Let me know if you have more questions :)
  • @Ieuan Coombs Forgot to say- I used the computer audio captured via Quicktime for the edit- no external device.
  • Hi Monique,

I made a short "horror" film on Zoom over the first lockdown in the UK countryside. I'll try and answer some of the questions you put below.

I ended up relying on Quicktime to achieve what I wanted to. It has a recording function- whereby it records what it sees from the webcam. I used zoom to allow the actors to engage with each other, but got them to record their own material via Quicktime individually. I then took those quicktime files, and using the multi camera editing option in adobe premiere, edited the material. I found this graham norton article quite helpful: https://www.directors.uk.com/news/directing-under-lockdown
but couldn't find a massive amount of information about this online so ended up figuring out a lot as I went.

If you've got any other questions- let me know. Happy to send you what we came up with as well re: the horror short!

    Best
    Ieuan

@Will Liney Thanks for the heads up!
  • Hi Monique!
Hopefully my response isnt too late for you. So I creative and recorded a talk show using zoom and then edited and posted it to be watched at anytime.
I hope that was helpful. Im open if you have any more questions.
    x
  • @James Worsley Thank you so much. I would like to know from a technical point of view how did you approach it. Did you use the camera from the device or did you use another type of webcam. Also did you use the audio from the devices or capture seperate sound? Trying to work on a project in the best quality possible but retain that zoom/video call look.
