  • I would suggest putting a press kit together (they are also call media kit) which contains informations like target audience, circulations etc. which gives any potential sponsors an idea what exposure they can expect.

Most magazine has these info available on their website, so you can have an idea what sort of information you need to put together.
  • Some great answers below.

I’d also suggest that you use your community or followers to provide some specific research or data about brands or products that they want to engage more with, use more of or like the most.

You can do that via Google forms, One Pulse etc. That way, when approaching sponsors you also have a layer of data that supports why you’re approaching them and how many of your readers like/use/want to engage with the product more.

It can also help you pinpoint what kind of creative solutions to offer up.

Make it feel unique and differentiated also so that it doesn’t feel like you’re offering the same partnership to different brands and seeing which one bites. This can help with that.

    Stay Boom!

  • Just off the top of my head, you're goin gto have to prove to them that sponsoring your mag will lead to increased brand awarenss. You're probably going to want to show potential sponsors that:
    - Your magazine is in harmony with their brand's principles. I.e. Maybe they promote their brand by showing how their products/services promote empowerment/creativity among young women, your mag would do the same.
    - They are going to want to know that their target market are going to be reading your mag, so maybe explain to them who your target market are (e.g. young women aged 13-27 who are wanting to /starting out in creative industries.) Try and identify areas where your target market and theirs align (e.g. both care about using quality tools in their work) as this will demonstrate to them that sponsoring your mag will lead to increased brand awareness within their target market.
    - Support your claims with stats. Have you already got a loyal customer base? If not, how many people are you realistically going to reach with your mag? If you know it, what is the avarage spending power of your readers? Would the sponsor's product fit nicely into that soending power? e.g. younger readers may not have the money to purchase a state of the art graphic's tablet and computing equipment, but they may be able to invest in good quality art suplies.

    - Choose the right companies. Make sure that your readers would want to use their products/services, and that they fit in with your magazine's identity. Also, is it the right scale for the company. I.e. would the price you're charging give sponsors a good return on their investment? Will it help them grow or to achieve their business goals? For example, a local art supply store may wish to attract more younger people to their shop.

    - Be yourself. Do your research on their company, your audience and then you can go into any meeting confident, and that may help you show them your passion for your magazine. And that will show them that you are a "go getter" rather than a "go get that for me please will you" type person.

I hope this helps, and I'd love anyone who doesn't agree or has improvements on my suggestions to let me know, as that's how we all learn :)
