Hi guys! I’ve been given really different advice on how to start as a Fashion Stylist… Would you rather assist or work on your own shoots?

- I would definitely suggest assisting a fashion stylist first and then building up to your own shoots. Some of the best stylists have started in this way. Contact fashion stylists whose work you like/ admire and see if they need any help, you may need to do some work for free to build up your experience. Its imprtant to build up your knowledge, how teams work and who does what. Fashion styling is a hard job and parts of the role are very mundane and repetitive - packing clothes, carnets, endless paperwork and documentation but if you are organised, prepared to put in the hours, flexible to work long hours, willing to travel it can be a very rewarding career. Remember too that often jobs are secured by word of mouth and recommendations. If you do a small job well, it may well lead on to other work.
- If you are starting out, it's best to assist so you learn everything you need to know before starting your own shoots.
