Hi, I have a friend who is a graphic design graduate but she'd like to get into interior design. Does anyone have any tips on how?

  • Hi Carli,

As a graphic design you can absolutely transfer skills sets to interior design. I've been working in studios for the last 5 years, yes I went to university for Interior Design but all skills are shared in studios, espcially when someone has an interest to learn. If your friend would like to chat further about it I'd be happy to as I'm already mentoring a grad student through their post grad in interior design. I agree with @Arna Maria Kristjansdottir points that they should start saying that's where they want to go, join the dots etc as there are loads of free events and content you can learn from.
  • @Arna Maria Kristjansdottir thank you Arna, really appreciate your tips. She's just transformed her garden into this amazing space so that would be a good one for her portfolio for sure. I'm also encouraging her to join the Dots so she can connect with people and ask for advice :-)
  • Hi Carli
I got into interior Designing by working for friends. Obviously this is a privileged position as not everyone has friends that need interior design help.

I suggest starting out by telling everyone you know that this is what you’d like to do because you never know who knows someone who just moved or needs help with designing.
Also if you have ideas to improve someone’s living room or bathroom or whatever you can always ask them if they’re interested.
I’m suggesting these steps just so your friend can build a portfolio and take pictures of what she has done.

Your friend being a graphic designer I’m sure she can create beautiful content to sell her services as well.
  • I did a diploma with the Interior Design Institute which I really enjoyed. It wasn't cheap but it was intense and totally worth the money. As a graphic designer I'm sure she'd already have loads of the required tools and skills!
