Hi, I've started my graphic design journey, does anyone have any advice on how to get going with a portfolio of work? Thanks

  • @Abigail Baldwin thank you for sharing that, I’ll definitely take a look over the briefs you’ve sent!
The conceptual projects are such a smart way to get started.
  • @Laura Hurst thanks! that makes a lot of sense, I will sponge up as much inspiration as possible.
  • D&AD have free creative briefs you can download: https://www.dandad.org/en/d-ad-creative-inspiration-brief-templates/ I would pick something from here that interests you and give-it-a-go!

Like Benji said, the conceptual projects are great because it shows visually what you can do. Plus, you have more creative control (rather than it being "interfered" with by a client).
  • Like Benji said, focus on creating the kind of work you want to get. No point in putting loads of logos in if you're not interested in doing more branding work!

Also never stop learning. One of my favourite things about being a graphic designer is you have to be a chameleon and morph your designs around a huge range of clients. Absorb inspiration from everywhere and keep that inspiration tank topped up - your future designer self will thank you!
  • Create a conceptual portfolio for the type of design you want to get into (web/logo/poster/print/digital etc) for companies that don’t exist.

Clients you work with want to visually “see” what you can do more than just qualifications or experience you may have

Follow pages on insta that share stories of people who are looking for graphic designers for projects & DM all the ones that interest you with the conceptual portfolio. If you get a message back, go from there & experiment with different day rates till you feel comfortable in putting an amount as a standard fee for daily work.

DONT DO FREE WORK. (Unless it’s for a really good friend & you like the project. They will almost always expect it to be free forever).
