  • @Nick Pointon You're very welcome.

Sounds good to me, there are tons of courses online so I'm sure you can find one that works for you especially if it is for specific things.

    Best of luck!

  • Thanks for your input Kane, its much appreciated.

You're right about studying. To go back to full time Study would be kinda intense but the course I have my eye on is exactly what I'd want to do. There is no part time option with it though so Im going to keep looking for part time options to allow me to keep working.

    Thanks again,

    Nick

  • @Nick Pointon Hello Nick, no problem at all.

Sure thing, happy to help in anyway I can.
Sounds like a super interesting journey though, but hopefully you have now discovered what you want to be doing full time and all that experience is valuable.

    As for your questions:

    1. Studying: This is a personal thing, it is not for everyone and doesn't suit everyones work style. I personally loved studying but after school, college and UNI I was ready to get into the real world. There are plenty of full and part time courses which you can work around your schedule but as you have already had experience, I would say what might be more valuable is taking some courses in either software or particular areas of design you want to refine your skills in.

2/3 Working: Many designers do this either once they have had experience in the industry or it's the first thing they do out of education. Being set up as a freelancer is always beneficial and means you can always work on extra projects even if you have a full-time job.
There are pros and cons to both being freelance or applying for jobs, but the main advantage which is invaluable from a designer perspective is have other designers to bounce ideas off of and trying things and ideas out. This is something that is very hard to have when you are working by yourself. Again this is really down to personal preference but personally I would try working at some design studios or brands to get the experience of working in a collective. Not at all, always happy to give advice and pointers to all who are interested. It will ultimately be down to how you are as a designer, as some will argue ‘real world’ experience is the best thing you can have, but also education and courses give you the safe space to experiment, play around and be free without fear or loosing clients or worrying about winning pitches. Hopefully the above is useful, thanks
  • @Kane Davis Hi Kane, thanks for your reply.

Im looking for advice on next steps and how to move up. I feel kinda stuck as my circumstances are kinda different to most of the people on here I think. I love brand design. Ive been creating brand identities for small local businesses for about 5 years now. Im mostly self taught as I have no degree. Im a little older after returning to design after a ten year career change. My questions are: Do I go back to study to get a degree? Do I create my own company? Do I continue to apply for jobs?

Im mainly trying to connect with Career Coaches who have experience of the design world. But if you feel you have something to offer then I would be grateful for your thoughts. I appreciate that this may be a bigger question than you anticipated. Happy to take it off line if you prefer.

    Cheers,

    Nick
