Hi there! Anyone got some advice on how and where a graphic designer could make some extra income? Thanks a lot! (:

  • @Geoffrey Bunting Thanks so much for the reply! Very useful tips! I tried 99Designs for a while, but I just felt I was wasting my time.

I thought of making some T-shirt designs but I'm not sure where to start with that. I mean I can make the design itsefl but I don't know what to do next. Do you have some tips on how to strat off with that? Thanks a lot! (:
  • Avoid bidding sites. Using them is a great way to lose money in the long run - not to mention that places like Fiverr and 99Designs are unethical platforms and we're seeing even the most promising bidding sites move into that territory while prices plummet. The message of which, really, is don't undervalue yourself. A platform that will claim to do much of the work for you is often being dishonest about it - it's up to you to do everything and then you must pay for the privilege.

As independent markets become more low-budget (self-publishing, "logo design", etc) we are seeing more of a focus on product over service. So, if you're looking to supplement your income, keep that in mind: how can you turn your skills into products? Do you have illustrative skills that you can make into T-shirts or art? Pattern skills that you can turn into stock? That is probably the avenue I would suggest for a bit of extra money. For myself, I make about $100 a month from T-shirt sales; which isn't much but it's a welcome surprise when I look at my PayPal and have money.

It's not easy out there, in lots of ways, the industry is constantly changing and clients with it. The effect of bidding sites and the gig economy aren't necessarily as apparent in the general industry, but for people early in their careers it is easy to become undermined by the cheap marketplace.
