How can you make a start in writing/journalism when the typical academic route isn’t possible?

- Hi Brenan,I'll be happy to help if I can:)
- I don’t really know how this app works so I’m not sure if anyone who replied will see this but I just wanted to thank you all for your advice and suggestions. I posted my question and then instantly panicked and didn’t touch the app because for some reason beyond my comprehension I’m constantly at war with my own confidence but all the replies I got were useful, covered different points and had their own opinions mixed in so it covered as much ground as I could have asked for. I can’t be more thankful for that. I do have some follow ups now that I’ve finally regained the confidence to actually talk and use the app so if anyone is available for me to pick their brain please let me know.
- Hi Brenan,On top of everything else, I really believe in constantly honing your craft. If, for example, you want to write about music/theatre/art, go to as many gigs/plays/exhibitions as possible and read as many reviews/opinions on social media/critical analyses etc. as you can. Specialize in your subject as much as possible, so you offer an angle that's credible and unique. When you get your break and publish your first features it will make your writing stand out.
- I think, as with many creative industries, that getting experience in any way is an excellent way. This can be really hard, but my biggest piece of advice it to be cheeky and ask. Find people on here/ Linked In/ locally to you and ask around. The worst they can do is say no.Definitely agree with previous response from Alexandra. Also, creat a website and post your things. Start an instagram and twitter and post your writing. I know the writer Charley Cox literally started by posting on instagram, and she now has two book deals :) Best of luck to you!
- You can start building a Portfolio by sharing your writing online. If you don't want to start a Blog, you should check out www.medium.com. You can also email websites and blogs with suggestions of things you'd like to write.
