How do you become a Graphic Designer in the Publishing Industry?

I've always been interested in publication/book/mgazine/ editorial design. I've tried to apply and find roles as a designer in the publicasing industry but haven't succeeded. Is there a specific route that needs to be taken? What kind of work experince are recruiters looking for? I would honestly love to know.

  • @Abigail Baldwin Thanks for the reply. Definetly having a look at The Publishers Association :)
  • @Peter Yip Thanks for the advice. I noticed that with magazine publications. It is very competive!
  • I recommend getting in touch with The Publishers Association! They are the go-to for the industry, and support all types of careers within that sector. Definitey worth a look. :-) x
  • Graphic designs for magazine & editorial are done in house, I would say approaching the magazines would be your best option. And sometimes you might have to look into who actually owns the magazine, ie Vogue is by Conde Nast etc etc.

I would imagine publication and books are similar.

A good portfolio and experience is always welcome, it is a highly competitive role with more appliciant than jobs available....
