How do you go about writing your cover letter?

I think my CV is okay (but who knows really in this climate) but an area I've always struggled on is the cover letter. How do you do your cover letters? do you even do one? If you do, Do you have a generic one that you use or do you rewrite it every time? Do you have any tips on writing a cover letter?

  • Hey Max,
I just wrote an artcile over on Medium offering advice on writing cover letters to get jobs in advertising and creative industries. Hopefully you'll find the tips useful. Good luck!

  • @Aleksandra Slezak I'm going to tomorrows one and I'm looking forward to it! I've heard that as well saying that we don't really need one as creatives but the people who do universal credit and most other people I speak to such as managers of bar teams, customer service teams, GMs etc all say a cover letter is recommended even though I have my CV and my portfolio. I'll definitely take a look at that first link you sent!

    Thank you!
  • I'm currently looking for my first design job, and I don't have any cover letter. Recently I attended several online events, and I've heard that it's not necessary to have one as a creative. Everything I want to communicate to a potential employer is in my CV and all the rest in the CV's Profile :) I hope this helps!

I recommend watching some of @Pip Jamieson's events about jobs search here:

or attending events such as this one on Monday: https://the-dots.com/events/free-design-a-kickass-cv-5194?mpuid=379273&utm_campaign=EventAttendeeReminder&utm_source=Backend&utm_medium=email

    I hope this helps :)
