How does running your own business affect your personal life?

  • As a fashion startup we really don't have the luxury of taking to much time off... I will later when we have achived our goal. For now its grind mode.. hopefully the lady understands and will stick with it unitl the vision is realized.
  • I personally find it very difficult to switch off from work, both a blessing and a curse. Having great ideas the moment you get into bed isn't really what you want when hitting the pillow, but then I would rather that then scratching around for ideas!
  • @Laurie Mucha I agree 100%! It's taken me some time to find a routine/ritual that actually works as well. I'm always curious, what's your ritual look like?
  • Hi Milica,

Personally, I think it allows me to devote more time and energy to my personal life. That being said, I have to be quite strict with myself and set work boundries. The only downside is that I find it harder to meet people outside of my industry.
  • Hello Milica,

Expect a 1.5 years break I was always working as a freelancer for myself. I would say yes it's effecting my work life balance, absolutely on a really good way. As Sarah stated below it's up to you really wehn you work and when you don't. For me it fits perfectly for my lifestyle but it's fairly unique as I just can't sit in an office from 9-5. I would say it's not for everyone you need to be self-motived to enjoy this amount of freedom in your schedule and still get things done.
  • Hello Milica,

Five years ago I decided to leave my full time job to set up my own independent design and art studio practice. And ever since this has affected my personal life for the better. Every decision I make in relation to work is up to me. I have managed to have a better work-life balance since setting my business and most of the time I have managed to have more free evenings and long week ends than I ever had when working in full time jobs.

A lot of people told me it would affect my personal life and that my work would blend into it but it has not. My work is also one my passion and life long dedications so on the odd chance work and personal life interwine, it's not always a bad thing. My 'business' and 'personal life' fuel each other and feed each other as well as keeping me going. So I would say it's rather positive so far, 5 years later.
