How much MB for pdf portfolios is too big? And how "bad" can the quality of your work get with a smaller size pdf?

once more I am here with a question that has been bothering me. I am an illustrator and currently working on my portfolio and I have been strugling with the size of my pdf.
I have read somewhere that the pdf should not exceed 8 MB but I have some trouble with managing that (currently at 9,3 MB).
I have been tweeking and trying but if I go any lower with the dpi, some of my work just does not seem too well anymore so I am wondering: Where is the line? How big is too big? What quality is too bad?
Any advice, experience and opinions?

- Hey Patrycja, lovely illustrations! When we get sent portfolios we prefer to receive a link (dropbox, we transfer, website). But I'd say anything under 10mb would be fine.
