I am looking into making a new web portfolio and not finding anything right on template sites. Anyone would like to work with me on this?

  • Format is very good and I've used it for a few years now. I've tried many over the years; SmugMug, Format, Squarespace. Just a few to name.

I even wrote a quick blog on why I chose Format over Smugmug. You can have a read if you like:

Have a look at my site that has been built using one of Format’s templates.

The main site for Format is:

All the best in your decisions.

  • I would recommend looking at Semplice https://www.semplice.com/
it's a super flexible system which sits on Wordpress, a theme but so much more! Have a look at the showcase section to see what it is capable of https://www.semplice.com/showcase

No vested interest, just used Semplice for a few sites and found it the easiest Wordpress setup by far, and I have used a fair few alternatives!
  • Hey @rama lee,

Like everyone said as far as template vs custom is concerned it depends on how dynamic you want your site to be.

As a retoucher, I Format.com at www.rashpalgurm.com and I love the basic template I'm using there.

However, if your looking for a mroe unique brand demonstration, then they are plenty of web developers around, including on this site I'm guessing.

Still, have a look at Format.com if you haven't already and see what you think!

    Stay safe,

    Rash
  • Hi Rama, just sent you an inbox message.
I had the same issues months back not wanting to go the template option. Find them generic and after a while I started to recognise other photogs using the same templates.
I opted for the custom option and am completely happy.
I’ll be able to suggest what might work for you.
  • Yeah, I totally hear you on the dilemma of using a template versus getting a site built.

I have gone from custom-built site Wordpress to Squarespace and now on format.com:

But I know a couple of people who do some good custom sites, including:

I would consider Wordpress if getting a designer in proves to be too expensive. It’s a bit more of a minefield in terms of options, and there is a learning curve to go through. But it’s proven to be a very solid platform and great for SEO. It's no surprise that many well know organisations and famous people etc use it.

Happy to chat more in messaging.
  • @rama lee I think it depends on your own personal level of expertise and how much time you’re willing to invest. If you’re comfortable tinkering with pre made templates on square space/Wordpress/wix then spend a little more time and have a look for something that suits. Wordpress or squrespace will have something.

But if there’s a specific design you have in mind I’d mock it up and have a web designer/builder look at it.

I’m not trying to pitch to you here, but if you want to do the latter I can have a look?
  • This page has loads of examples: https://portfolio.adobe.com/examples
  • Hi Rama, if you have a Photoshop subscription with Adobe, it should come with free access to Adobe Portfolio which offers lots of templates for building your own website. Have you tried looking into that?
  • @Deyasini Chatterjee I couldn’t find any suitable template on sites and wonder if I need to expand the search or hire website designer
  • @Peter Wright
Would you suggest to build one from scratch or browse around more templates on squarespace or wix?!
