I'd like to buy a new camera to shoot excellent quality videos and take photos as well. What camera do you recommend?

  • It depends what you want to shoot. I'd recommend Fuji XT3 for videos and photos, with great dr, but if you want to shoot for tele or bigger projects, they usually require an FS7 minimum.

Also, don't buy a higher MP, as it doesn't matter for video as much - what mainly matters is if it's at least capturing 10-bit for video with a decent dynamic range. FS7 is still tele industry standard and it has 10mp. Don't listen to people talking about megapixells.

Also, to capture great quality videos, you don't need a massive MP camera, all you need is experience and a good sense of composition & to know how to set the proper settings (which most videographers don't do properly) and how to light a scene (or use existing lighting to your advantage).

Editing and colour-grading is important too, but is often neglected, which can butcher the image if someone doesn't know what you're doing. I'd suggest shooting in rec709 if you don't know how to colour grade professionally, so not shooting in log or raw and then throwing a lut on, as it can degrade the image quality massively without proper grade.

The story is the most important though - if the story isn't compelling, even Arri Alexa cannot make it great.
  • What's your budget? The new Sony FX30 looks incredibly interesting and is an absolute steal, but only 10MP (which is fine for video but a bit on the low end for photos)

  • Hi @LNA M Would you need auto focus for video and pictures? Do you have lenses already?
